What is a Radiologist?

According to the American College of Radiology, radiologists are medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who specialize in diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries using medical imaging techniques.

Radiologists graduate from accredited medical schools, pass a licensing examination, and then go on to complete a residency of at least four years of unique post-graduate medical education in, among other topics:

  • Radiation safety and protection
  • Radiation effects on the human body
  • Appropriate performance and interpretation of quality radiological and medical imaging examinations

These physicians often complete a fellowship — one to two additional years of specialized training in a particular sub-specialty of radiology, such as breast imaging, cardiovascular radiology or nuclear medicine.

Radiologists physicians are usually board certified by the American Board of Radiology (for a doctor of medicine) or the American Osteopathic Board of Radiology (for an osteopathic doctor); an indication of a high level of training, and demonstrated excellence in the field.

Radiological procedures are medically prescribed and should only be conducted by appropriately trained and certified physicians under medically necessary circumstances. Radiologist physicians have four to six years of unique, specific, post–medical school training that includes radiation safety and ensure the optimal performance of radiological procedures and interpretation of medical images.

Common Patient Billing Questions

Why do I sometimes receive two bills for my procedure?

Occasionally, you may receive two bills for an imaging procedure:

  1. One bill comes from Magnolia Regional Hospital for providing the equipment and personnel performing the exam. Please call (662) 293-1082 for questions regarding this bill.
  2. Another bill reimburses the radiologist, the physician interpreting and supervising the exam. Magnolia Imaging Associates utilizes Acclaim Radiology Management for their billing services. You can contact them at (800) 318-5578 to address questions about your bill.

Why am I receiving a bill from a doctor I never saw?

Depending on what exam you underwent, you may have not physically met the radiologist. After your imaging exam was completed, the images were reviewed by a radiologist who issued a formal interpretation regarding the imaging findings. The bill you receive is for this medical interpretation. Occasionally, the radiologist may consult with you personally or contact your physician with findings on your exam.
