As parents and children prepare for the upcoming return to school this semester, the process is going to look a bit different amidst COVID-19. Magnolia Regional Health Center (MRHC) and both the Corinth School District and Alcorn County School District want to ensure it is as safe and seamless as possible.

MRHC and both school districts recently formed a COVID coalition, in which the entities are teaming up to educate the community and develop the safest and most appropriate protocols for children returning to classes in July and August.

“As COVID-19 cases continue to increase throughout our region, and our hospital staff and community continues to work hard to combat the virus, the safety of our community remains our top priority,” said Jim Hobson, chief executive officer at MRHC. “I am extremely thankful for the forward-thinking leadership both school districts possess as we team up to better plan, prepare and implement the appropriate precautions to keep students, teachers, staff and families safe for the upcoming school year.”

The plan, which entails community education using newspaper ads, videos, email and social media messaging, and features physicians from MRHC, is intended to incorporate important safety and prevention details so that parents, students and district staff members continue to receive education on crucial steps to protect themselves and individuals around them.

“We are pleased to partner with Magnolia Regional Health Center in our efforts to provide a safe learning environment for students in the Corinth School District.  We also recognize that this partnership can also promote a safer community resulting in safer schools,” said Dr. Lee Childress, Superintendent Corinth School District.

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, we started thinking about our process of returning to school for the upcoming school year,” said Bill Brand, Alcorn County School District Superintendent. “We are working closely with our healthcare providers, as they are playing an instrumental role in the process. By teaming together, not only are we hopeful for safe reopening, but we are also hopeful that we are able to remain in school consistently throughout the year.”

Both the Corinth School District and Alcorn County School District have return dates quickly approaching. The Corinth School District is scheduled to return on July 27th, and the Alcorn County School District students are slated to return on Aug. 5th. Both districts have released detailed return plans for parents and families to reference. They can be found on the appropriate district websites. As cases continue to rise, it is important that everyone takes appropriate steps to protect your family and friends.
