Hemorrhoid surgery, also called a hemorrhoidectomy, is a common procedure used to remove hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anal area. They are usually harmless but can cause pain and itching.

There are two kinds of hemorrhoids:

  • External hemorrhoids. These form under the skin around the anus.
  • Internal hemorrhoids. These form in the lining of the anus and lower rectum. Internal hemorrhoids can cause rectal bleeding and may prolapse, which means they fall through the anal opening.

If home treatments don’t resolve your discomfort, you might need surgery. Most hemorrhoidectomies allow you to go home same day. The surgery is performed using local or general anesthetic, so you feel no pain. After surgery, you may experience soreness or bleeding. Symptoms last about one to two months and can be managed at home.

The type of surgery used depends on the size and type of the hemorrhoid. There are several methods, including:

  • A rubber band around the hemorrhoid to restrict blood flow and shrink it down
  • Cutting the hemorrhoid off
  • Stapling a hemorrhoid to restrict blood flow
  • Laser hemorrhoid removal

The general surgery staff at MRHC will discuss your treatment options in detail. Follow these tips to help the procedure go smoothly.

#1: Follow Pre-Surgery Instructions

Your surgeon will recommend a diet for the days leading up to surgery. Starting the night before surgery, you may be asked not to eat or drink. You may also be directed to use an enema or laxative to clear your colon, making irregularities such as polyps more evident. It’s important to follow these instructions exactly so your surgery goes smoothly.

#2: Schedule Time to Rest

Hemorrhoid surgery may require you to take time off work. After surgery it’s important to avoid heavy lifting and take it easy. This allows your body to heal.

#3: Make Sure to Get a Ride

Since you’ll be undergoing a form of anesthesia, it’s important for someone to drive you home. Driving after anesthesia or while on pain medication can be dangerous. Schedule a ride and get home safely.

#4: Share All Medications and Supplements with Your Doctor

Be sure to let your primary care provider know about all medication, vitamins or supplements you take. Your provider may recommend adjusting your medicines before or after surgery to reduce the risk of complications.

#5: Make Sure You Understand Your Hemorrhoid Surgery Procedure
